DIY Celebration Banner aka Bunting

The holiday season is upon us and it's the perfect time to DIY some cute decorations. I used my banner for a fall party we are hosting at the house but I love it so much that I will be making a Christmas version just to use as decoration.

I will explain how I made this below but you can customize it however you want. Different fabric, smaller or larger triangles, different bias tape, shorter or longer, the possibilities are endless.

This project is made with a sewing machine but you could hand sew it as well as it just uses a basic straight stitch.

You will need about .75 yards of fabric and you can mix and match fabric or use up leftover fabric. I used this gorgeous fall fabric bundle for my project. I also bought this beautiful roll of bias tape. It was a little pricey and you can definitely make your own bias tape or buy a cheaper version, but I wanted a quick project and will use this bias tape for multiple projects to come.

Difficulty Level: Beginner

Instructions:

  1. Cut out a triangle pattern on a piece of paper. Alternatively, you can measure your triangle on your first piece of fabric and trace that for the rest of the triangles. My triangle was 7" x 7" x 5.25" and that includes a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Feel free to make your triangles as big or small as you want for your banner!
  2. Cut out two triangles per fabric (we will be sewing them together so the triangle is double sided). I did ten triangles across my banner so I had to cut out 20 triangles.
  3. Place good sides facing of one set of triangles and sew up both long sides of the triangle with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Do not sew along the short side of the triangle, that will stay open. Continue this way until all your triangles are sewn together.
  4. Trim the excess fabric from the side and at the tip to make it easier to get a nice point when turned right side out.
  5. Turn each triangle right side out and use a pencil (eraser side) or other long skinny object with a blunt top to push the tip of the triangle out.
  6. Iron each triangle so they lay flat and have a finished look.
  7. Line up your triangles with short sides up and measure across the length.
  8. The length of your bias tape with be the length of all your triangles lined up plus 20 inches on the left and right side so you can tie it to wherever you are hanging it. Mark where your triangles start and end on your bias tape with a disappearing fabric marker or chalk.
  9. Cut bias tape.
  10. Open your bias tape and sew each triangle one by one to the inside bottom of the bias tape. You should be able to fold the top portion of bias tape over the front of the triangle which we will do later. I continuously sewed my triangles down without cutting the thread. Just lift your presser foot at the end of one triangle, insert the next triangle, put down presser foot and slowly sew on to the next triangle.
  11. Once all triangle are sewn on you can fold over your bias tape and use an iron to press it down.
  12. Sew down entire length of bias tape. You can sew across your previous lines or sew at the edge.
  13. All done! You can iron it a bit more for any bumps but it's ready to be hung up as decoration or for you next party!

Overall this project took only an hour and is super beginner friendly if you're learning how to sew. The trickiest part will be doing the bias tape but just take it slow.
