Heart Shaped Strawberry Pop Tarts

These heart shaped pop-tarts are so easy to make! I use store bought pie crust and strawberry jam but you can also make both of them homemade if you're feeling up for it. I do love making strawberry jam homemade but sometimes you just need an easy recipe to whip up for friends, kids, or as a sweet treat for yourself.

I used edible paints and cookie punch outs for the designs on top but feel free to skip them or add a glaze on top instead. You can also use natural food coloring like beet powder, carrot powder, ground tumeric, or butterfly pea powder just to name a few. I don't mind using food gels because it's not a lot of paint that is getting used so I'm okay with a tiny bit of food dye here and there.

You mix the food gels with the white edible paint to get the perfect painting consistency. This also allows you to make whatever color you want by mixing more or less white or combining gel colors. I use a paper plate and put a glob of white paint down first. I then grab some colored gel with my paintbrush and put it on to the paper plate. Grab some white paint and start mixing until you get the color you want.

I like to use different paint brushes for each color so that I don't mix them in their containers by accident. Wash the paintbrushes in some warm water after and you can use them again! Just keep them separate from any other crafting paint brushes (mine stay in my pantry with my baking supplies).

When doing an egg wash at the end of the recipe, make sure you don't add egg on to any parts that were painted. This will smear the paint. I try and just carefully dab some egg wash on the parts that are not painted.
